Thinking about the garden is a favorite winter pastime. I look forward to the seed catalogues that start coming in this month; I start to have new ideas for planting combinations, dream of growing the perfect new rose, and anticipate the first Snow Bells to emerge. All this helps to perk up the dark cold days of this winter month.
A glance a this painting has similar effects on me as I remember the summer day sitting in Edgar Denison’s garden water coloring his combination of plantings. It reminds me I need to try harder to get that purple nicotiana planted behind the lamb’s ear and the yellow day lily behind that is a good idea. I should see if I can find the black blue salvia and the dramatic ligularia dentate big leaf. Or … maybe that is all too ambitious a project. I think I will be satisfied with his success with gardening and just remember; there are warm and more colorful days ahead in the garden.
